Happy Cubicle Day! We have so many funny and unexpected national and international days on our calendar. Sunday, April 28, 2019, is dedicated to the cubicle. From what I’ve seen, most cubicles are far from worth celebrating. How boring can a workplace be? Too much dullness, too many toxins, not enough eco-friendlyness and not enough fresh air. You want to do something about it and transform your cubicle into a work space you feel more comfortable in. Here’s some inspiration.
Green it up with plants
This time, when I’m talking about making your office cubicle more green, I don’t just mean making it eco-friendlier. I mean literally putting some green in it. Get yourself a good looking planter and put a beautiful green plant to keep you company all day. Plants purify the surrounding air, so it will provide oxygen to you and helps you think clearly. Plants also have a calming effect and they even help to boost productivity. Your office plant won’t only make you more content, it also helps you to be better at your job.
Let artwork inspire you
Let’s face it, work days can be long days and we spend many hours in our cubicles, our offices, behind our desks staring at a boring wall. Make sure you get your creative juices flowing by putting up artwork to inspire you and make you feel good. Pick something you love looking at, or that makes you smile, or that sparks a conversation with your co-workers. Keep it decent though, no need to offend everybody around you. Brighten up your cubicle with colors or motivating quotes.
Maybe you prefer to surround yourself with pictures of your friends and family or the bucket list places you want to travel to. If you’re cubicle has metal walls or big metal filing cabinets, you good have some fun with magnetic printing paper. Simply print the artwork, quote or picture you love on the magnet sheets and stick it on any metal surface you want. No need for pins or nails, easy to remove and handy if you like to change the artwork often.
Level up your organizing
To me, it’s always been hard not to make a huge mess on my desk. It never ends well: I’ll spend way too much time looking for pens, my stapler, important documents that I’m sure were here just a second ago and why are my glasses in my filing cabinet?
I don’t mind organizing at all, it helps me keep track of my work and it saves me all that time searching for just about anything. But I don’t want my organizers to look like just another ugly pile on my desk. I want them to add some style. So why not put up some wall organizers in the style you love? Or maybe get a cute basket to put your sustainable pencils in
. It’ll keep your desk clean and adds to the feel and atmosphere in your cubicle.
Try a little wellness
Selfcare is important, not just in your spare time. You’ll be a better employee or boss if you are healthy, relaxed and in a good mood. Make sure you stay hydrated during the day. Bring your own reusable water bottle to work and refill it during the workday. It’ll keep you from feeling drowsy and it’s better for your health. You’ll be looking at that water bottle every single day, so you might as well pick a nice one.
Or bring your own relaxing tea, so you can relief some stress simply by drinking a nice hot cup of herbs. Unless you are too relaxed as is, then go for an energizing tea in order not to fall asleep at your desk.
Avoid snacking out of boredom or because it smells so good in the company’s cantina. Bring your own lunch and healthy snacks to help you get through your work day in a better and cheaper way. Find a reusable lunch container you like and that fits your lifestyle. A standard sandwich will do fine in most containers. But if you want to bring soup you’ll need a different container than if you prefer salads with dressing on the side. Invest in one that suites you. You might even want to complete it with a set of travel cutlery. Beats eating soup with your hands, right?!
The air in office spaces can be hard on your skin. A day at the office can leave your skin to feel dry and itchy. Give yourself and your body a treat with all natural, non-toxic skincare. Prevent the itchiness and make sure your skin always feels fresh, smooth and taken care off. Your future self will thank you for it too, if you rejuvenate your skin in time.
Make sure you find brands that use organic ingredients, that don’t use toxic chemicals and that don’t use animals for testing: happy skin, happy you, happy animals, happy planet, happiness all over.
Use eco-friendly office supplies
This one goes beyond your own little cubicle and could benefit the entire company, as well as the planet. Convince your boss to switch to greener office supplies. Think about recycled printer paper or recycled printer toners and ink. Most of the time these eco-friendly alternatives are cheaper in use. So if the company won’t do it for the planet, have them do it to reduce costs and improve profits. Like when using staples staplers. Think of how many tiny metal staples you’ll save each year when dozens of employees make small changes like this.
It would be even better to go paperless at the office. Most documents, mailing and notes can be done digitally. No need to print every single page you write or read. If you prefer to make notes by hand, because it’ll help you remember better, you might want to try a reusable notebook. Some have pages that work like whiteboards and can be erased. Some can be combined with an app to store your great ideas and important notes, so you can erase your notebook pages and reuse them while keeping files on your computer or phone.
